This ingredient appears in SodaTide marketing material but not on the Supplement Facts panel supplied with the product, which lists chicory root inulin, potato resistant starch and a probiotic blend instead. Formulas do get revised, so ask the seller which version ships today and read the panel on the bottle you receive. See the full comparison.
About Glucomannan in SodaTide
What Glucomannan Is
Glucomannan is a soluble dietary fibre extracted from the root of the konjac plant (Amorphophallus konjac), a tuber long used in East Asian cooking to make noodles and jelly.
What makes it distinctive is viscosity. Glucomannan absorbs a very large amount of water relative to its weight and forms a thick gel, considerably more so than most other soluble fibres.
Why It Is in the Advertised SodaTide Formula
It sits squarely on the appetite and satiety side. The gel it forms adds bulk in the stomach and slows gastric emptying, which is the mechanism behind the fullness associated with high-fibre meals.
It is a sensible ingredient for a product positioned around appetite-management routines, and it is one of the few fibres with a reasonable body of human research on the topic.
What the Research Covers
Glucomannan has been examined in systematic reviews and meta-analyses looking at body weight in overweight adults. Findings have been mixed, with some reviews reporting modest effects and others finding little once study quality is accounted for.
Research generally uses gram-level daily amounts, commonly in the range of one to four grams, taken with water before meals.
Safety Notes Worth Knowing
- Always take it with plenty of water. Because it expands so much, glucomannan taken without adequate fluid has been associated with choking and oesophageal obstruction. This is the single most important thing to know about it.
- Anyone with difficulty swallowing, or any history of bowel obstruction, should avoid it or seek medical advice first.
- It may slow the absorption of medication taken at the same time. Separate doses by a couple of hours and check with a pharmacist.
- Wind and bloating are common in the first week or two while your gut adjusts.
How It Would Complement the Formula
Glucomannan and green tea extract approach the same goal from different directions — one through physical bulk and satiety, the other through metabolic pathways. See the full ingredient comparison.
